Your developers are running away for Cloud Services !

Your developers are running away for Cloud Services !

CIOs, CTOs do you know your developpers are running away for Cloud Services ? Outside your company ? Maybe in few cases yes, but I guess in many cases you don’t ! About the news ? This week is a major week for Cloud Computing Services ! Next Monday, it means starting November the 1st Amazon will start to deliver AWS Free Usage Tier. No, no, I am not kidding… AWS for FREE ! Awesome isn’t it ? Sure there are some service limitations. Look at Amazon website (here) and also some good posts on this topic. One from James Staten from Forrester (here) and an other one from Krishnan Subramanian (here) With Platform as a Service (PaaS) proposals, developers teams find some services they expected for a long time. – simpler and faster means agility, – just what they need and no more means the service they expected, – less expensive means just pay what you are using and no more. About the market ? This move is not a new move. Amazon is not alone in that space. Some others provider are trying to catch developers, like Joyent (with Smart platform), Microsoft (with Windows Azure) and Salesforce (with Force.com). You can also look at my previous post on PaaS. About the risks ? Your code is part of your IT Asset. Can you imagine it can be shared over the Internet without any control ? You have to remember some of the Platform as a Service are free, and in most cases very easy to manage with only a valid credit card number. About managing this ? Still coming...
Steve Ballmer and the Cloud

Steve Ballmer and the Cloud

Look in the sky in these rainy days. All Cloud news are falling like the rains in autumn. Why Steve Ballmer and the Cloud ? Maybe I should talk about Microsoft and the Cloud. This company is moving fast forward in this direction. Few days ago, I had the chance to participate to Steve Ballmer’s presentation regarding the Cloud in Paris. It was also the opportunity to have Microsoft’s vision regarding this challenge. The message was clear and straight, you know Steve is a good speaker: “Cloud will change everything and Microsoft is the leader for Business Enterprise.” The speech was structured in five parts. – Create opportunities and responsibilities, Cloud Computing is an opportunity and a new business model. – Help you learn decide and take action, including search capabilities. – Enhance your social and professional interactions, Cloud Computing for better collaboration and sharing. – Drives servers advances that drive the Cloud, Cloud Computing hardware as a commodity. – Wants smarter devices, Cloud Computing and the device means mobile devices. It is about new Windows Phone 7 devices. In each topic you can read Microsoft Offer. Microsoft will provide multiples Cloud Services in various areas. Look also the last news release for Microsoft, all about Cloud ! I think that Office 365 is a significative change for Microsoft moving from a Software company to a Cloud Service company. For you also it’s an opportunity to start moving using Cloud Services. Look at Louis Nauges’ Blog he is giving a pragmatic migration approach for Office migration (good post in french). Where do you start ? I am convinced that...
Platform as a Service and some good men

Platform as a Service and some good men

Recently, I was reading a post from a friend. He was speaking about some good men related to values and day-to-day behavior. Sure he is right ! In the challenge of introducing new approaches and new technologies, the values you are sharing are key. I had some interesting exchanges with some teammates about Platform as a Service definition and boundaries. I was convinced on some point with a definition in mind and some of them push me to check. We are sharing some values so the challenge is possible in a trusted manner. What did I do ? I checked ! And we were both right, maybe more them than me 😉     The debate was about the boundaries between Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS). If you look at Wikipedia definition you can find “Cloud platform services or “Platform as a Service (PaaS)” deliver a computing platform and/or solution stack as a service, often consuming cloud infrastructure and sustaining cloud applications. It facilitates deployment of applications without the cost and complexity of buying and managing the underlying hardware and software layers”. I also found in my favorite Cloud book from John Rhoton, he adds that Platform as a Service will “may also offer further functions to support the developers”. What are the technologies and offer we can find ? Let’s have a look at a few of them : – Archer Technologies SmartSuite Framework – EngineYard Solo – Google App Engine – Microsoft Azure – Relational Long Jump on demand – Salesforce.com Force.com – Apprenda – Heroku With all theses examples, we can see that all Platform as...
Cloud Computing Benefits for IT transformation

Cloud Computing Benefits for IT transformation

In this post, I would like to share my views and ideas about IT Transformation vis-à-vis Cloud Computing. IT transformation means moving away from the traditional IT model in use in your organization and opting for a more cost-effective, flexible one by stepping into the cloud. Cloud Computing is the key to leverage your IT. Cloud Computing or its synonyms, Utility Computing, Web 3.0, and Grid Computing, all are based on a simple concept, that is access to almost unlimited computing power and data storage via the internet. It deploys thousands of virtualized servers to push up the limit on computing resource and efficiency, with offsite backups at more than one place. The cloud benefits you in more than a few ways. The new IT model will have more scalability, agility, simplicity as well as much reduced Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). The fixed and variable costs of IT have been Hardware cost, Software cost and Service cost. In traditional IT model, the first two are responsible for about 70% of the total cost. By leveraging your IT to the cloud, significant reduction in these costs will have an invigorating effect on the financial health of your company. The Total Cost of Ownership may go down by as much as 60% in est case like CRM Usage like Salesforce, look at www.salesforce.com or some Mail Services like Microsoft’s BPOS look at www.microsoft.com or Google apps look at www.google.com. You can embrace the Cloud either as your IT infrastructure or development platform, as per your choice. To take advantage of this emerging IT model, there are several points to ponder...
