HP Software Universe 2010 in Barcelona

HP Software Universe 2010 in Barcelona

Today is the first day for HP Software Universe 2010 in Barcelona. It already started with HP Software Customer Advisory Board (CAB) which I found a great lesson about listening to your customers. The CAB is organized twice a year, one session in Europe and one in the US. The CAB is where HP speaks and exchanges with customers for sharing strategy, next steps and also feedbacks from clients. HP’s clients can come to express their voice. When you are a major HP Client you can participate on a dedicated area like Project Portfolio Management, Automation or IT Service Management as examples. Your HP Software sales manager can help you in the process if you want to attend at the next session. The good point is, if you doubt about it, that HP is listening from its clients. An other good point is to see that participants concerns are the same. Either they are in different industries or using different HP products. In the CAB session, you will present your company landscape in 3 slides including your HP Solutions and major challenges. The clients’ representative in the CAB are at Management level with operational responsibilities to explain operational challenges and illustrate the feedbacks. I think the CAB is a great place for sharing and give feedback. The best value for it, is peers exchanges. Peers help you sharing issues and solutions and it helps also for benchmarking : am I late or faster, structured or need to improve ? You will get some answers. The CAB was a great sound for the next days in HP Software Universe 2010...
Back to basics : What is IT infrastructure ? #1 Datacenter and PUE.

Back to basics : What is IT infrastructure ? #1 Datacenter and PUE.

I had some comments about explaining and defining more what is IT Infrastructure. I am very pleased to introduce this new serial ! Back to basics : What is IT Infrastructure ? Datacenter and PUE. Did your heard about PUE ? On the Datacenter field, PUE is a key element. A foundation for the Datacenter efficiency. First : What does it mean ? PEU is for Power Usage Effectiveness. But before talking about efficiency of the Datacenter and PUE… What is a Datacenter ? A Datacenter is a special space, it can be a building, a part of a building, with a good security level to be sure that just the right people can access. The Datacenter is where you can find some servers, telecom equipments and all the datas. Without these Datacenters : No Cloud Computing ! The heart of the Cloud Computing is in the Datacenter. Look at this two articles (in french) : Au coeur d’un Datacenter. Les serveurs très gourmands en énergie. In these posts, it highlights the fact Datacenters is greedy with energy. Why is it the case ? A server, a storage system or a network equipment is consuming power… and releasing heat. Imagine you put hundreds and hundreds in some cases thousands in the same space ? It requires some cooling… which also needs energy. Then you can understand the difference between the total energy needed for the Datacenter and the energy just for Infrastructures (Servers, storage, telecom equipement,…). Look also at some figures : energy for datacenters is incredibly important. 0,6% of US electricity in 2000, 1,5% in 2010 and analysts think the needs will increasing more and more. What about...
What time is it ?

What time is it ?

It’s time for Cloud Computing at Club MAZAG with EMC and Jaeger-LeCoultre ! Well informed IT’s Heads and Managers of the financial sector have been on time around Cloud Computing this Monday evening, November 22nd. Next time is the Cloud Computing … we are going to use it in the next few years! Cloud computing “is your Utility Computing ” explained Christian Hiller, General Manager of EMC France. The financial sector has not yet launch a significant move in this area but some services such as mail or the Customer Relationship Management (CRM) can be a first step “dans les nuages”. How can we imagine the move to the Cloud? A suggested steps: A dedicated Cloud in the customer’s premises, A dedicated Cloud with a Partner, A Public Cloud to Share Infrastructures. However, some obstacles remain to rise as the legal and security aspects. To share these issues, worthy of precision engineering is nothing like a lesson from Jaeger-LeCoultre’s masters watchmakers! Thanks to Arnaud Lassaussois from “Les Montres” shops. Bravo to Club MAZAG for this very successful evening which allows… time for meetings. If you want to participate to the next edition of Club MAZAG, leave your details here. Please have also a look at Denis’ blog, our guest....
A fresh saturday with innovative projects at Epitech !

A fresh saturday with innovative projects at Epitech !

For over 5 years, I participate regularly (just to say not every year) in the forum dedicated to EIP – Epitech Innovative Project. Guess what? It is always incredible! I am always impressed by the work of students. It is always with a very good quality. The students are ready to present their projects with a hook, usually a special shirt, some papers and videos on screens. The projects are all interesting. I found during this edition, two projects that I want to share with you. The first is called Cloudly Have you ever had the unpleasant surprise of having no more space on your USB drive? It’s annoying right? With Cloudly it is finished! Your storage is always on a USB key but this time you have no limits! How? Cloud effect! Cloudly gives you a USB stick without limitation by storing information on a space in the Cloud (Amazon). Guaranteed effect!       The second project is called Diva You tell me that this is a premium service based on music? Not really … Diva merits its name for the configuration of environments: Platform as a Service (PaaS) this around a very simple Appstore. A Diva for PaaS! Imagine you need to install MySQL for 5 hours for the duration of a test? In normal times it is long, it’s complicated and it is expensive. For less than one euro Diva gives you this service! To achieve this feat Diva uses ElasticHosts. Very promising for SMEs and all developers who want quick service without server configured and caring implementation. The icing on the cake? Once the server is configured, if you do not use it … you pay nothing. A true Diva! After...
What Cloud Computing will change for ? #1 : A CIO perspective by Sylvain Pendaries

What Cloud Computing will change for ? #1 : A CIO perspective by Sylvain Pendaries

Following one of my lastest post, I am very proud to introduce this series : “What Cloud Computing will change for ?” Thanks to Sylvain ! A CIO perspective by Sylvain Pendaries. – Is there a change ? Cloud Computing is one of the trends leading to a commoditization of IT services. More and more IT services will become a commodity (that will be for sale to the better, maybe cheaper, bidder) that will not be part of the company’s competitive advantage. By essence, Cloud computing will make resources available for anyone to use, leading to a change in the paradigm of service delivery. It remains to be seen whether Cloud computing will be economical, flexible and secure, all major questions that corporations are asking right now. That change is happening now. A lot of large companies have embraced it, while some others are reluctant mostly because of loss-of-control and security concerns. – What kind of change ? The change stems from the fact that CIO and their IT teams will act now more as a Supply Chain manager trying to combine services from inside, outsourcers and the Cloud. It has the potential to change the role of IT into more of an architecture role rather than just a service provider, even a captive one. I believe that IT management is now understanding the magnitude of that change. It’s potentially a very high-impact change. Most Infrastructure departments will see their responsibility evolve into a “pick and choose” department, responsible for assembling best-of-breed services from reliable and disparate sources. IT people (on the buy-side of the business) need to realize that...
