Cloud Computing is not a New Technology !

Few would disagree that the Cloud Computing will launch a new era in IT Organizations. Since the start of client-server computing, Companies have difficulties to keep pace with every technological advances, be it in hardware or software. In order to retain control, they made up this simple rule: “We set up and configure, you only do as you are told.” This created a clear demarcation between IT personnel and the Users that were working in the company organization. But remind you; it was the only way in which the IT people could have kept the ever-growing genie of IT within the bottle. Fast forwarding to the present, one observes that IT organizations are bursting at the seams with work overload. The perceived benefits of cutting-edge technologies only just started (in the form of better hardware utilization, lower costs and higher ROI). Then, at this moment enters the rescuing Knight – Cloud Computing! Larry Ellison, CEO, Oracle Corporation said en September 2008, “What the hell is Cloud Computing? I have no idea what anybody is talking about. I mean it is really just complete gibberish. It’s insane”. And time shift… Is the Cloud use the latest Technologies? No one denies the fact that emerging technological advances improve the way of working. All the wonderful capabilities of Cloud Computing have been made possible due to technologies like virtualization, network improvement, Storage capabilities and so on. But Cloud Computing is not a new Technology. Is Cloud Computing using the latest Architecture? SOA is used for years, and new Architectures will improve the Cloud model. But Cloud Computing is not a new Architecture. Is Cloud Computing a framework or a methodology? ITIL, CMMI, PMI, eSCM are key for IT People they benefit the Cloud. Cloud Computing is not a new methodology. As...

Back to basics : What is IT Infrastructure ? #2 Storage

Storage, what a nice topic ! You know, I like the base line of a famous storage vendor about computing Storage : “Where information lives“. This is true ! The storage is where all the datas and informations are. I introduced in a previous post on the Datacenter side. Datas Storage and Mass Storage are in the Datacenter. What is Storage on the Technical side ? I looked at a definition and we can find that Storage is a technical component where IT stores Informations. All these informations can be stored in different kind of technical boxes. Started years ago with : paper storage, magnetic storage (floppys and hard disks), optical storage and flash storage. Each technology can give even more capacity or speed to access the information depending of the needs. Look at Wikipedia article on Computer Data Storage. “IDC has estimated that enterprise data doubles every 18 months. That’s a scary statistic !”, said Matt Prigge. With the development of IT, the need for more storage increased dramatically. Can you imagine that every day, Internet is creating 15 Peta bytes of data ! Every single day ! And what are the trends ? Gartner said the growth will be 59% per year for the next coming 4 years. Data growth is one of the biggest IT infrastructure challenge for large enterprises, also said Gartner. Terrific isn’t it ? Some are calling this the Data Explosion. Come back on the Storage side. Storage in not alone in the Datacenter. It means the storage is in the Datacenter, connected to a dedicated network called SAN – Storage Area Network...

What Cloud Computing will change for ? #2 : An Innovative Company perspective by Jérémy Fain

Following the first post by Sylvain Pendaries, with a CIO perspective on what Cloud Computing will change, I am very proud to introduce this second post. “What Cloud Computing will change for ?…” Thanks to Jérémy ! An innovative Company perspective by Jérémy Fain. What will Cloud Computing change for you ? Verteego is an online environmental performance applications vendor. In other words, we provide software-as-a-service (SaaS) to help businesses go green by, for instance, monitoring their Greenhouse Gas emissions, or tracking hazardous chemicals in their supply chain. We basically are a pure player in the Cloud Computing space. Verteego wouldn’t exist as it is without the very notion of Cloud Computing, and Cloud Computing software pioneers such as SalesForce or NetSuite. So, Cloud Computing is not really a change driver for Verteego, but more of an enabler: the more Cloud Computing becomes a mainstream architecture within corporations, the easier it will be for Verteego to be deployed worldwide by global organizations who want to better the environment and their bottom line. Is there a change ? I believe Cloud Computing in itself represents both a cultural change and a technology challenge. What kind ? A cultural change because CIOs have to redefine the way information is structured: the era when data had to be stored within the firewall is over. The best applications are now available on the Cloud, and it would be a pity for users to have to consume software the old-fashioned way and not benefit from the latest innovations from independent application vendors. Looking at the economics of Cloud Computing, it’s much more healthy for a...
