Leadership in the Cloud

Leadership in the Cloud

This week I had the chance to see Andrew Marr in a special event for our clients. His topic was about key skills for a politician’s leadership. Great speech, straight to the point, Andrew is really a very smart and very good speaker, I can feel his passion  for politics and even more for his country. Great food for thoughts. Ok, ok you might think I am diverging and no link with my favorite topic : Cloud Computing and Digital Transformation. This  usage revolution needs a strong leadership.  As Andrew Marr said, where are our leader for this Transformation in our companies? If you are in a big one, the lesson learnt  from politics could apply. Trust me I spent years in large corporations, politics thrives in  there. I  would like to share with you my top 6 key take-aways from Andrew’s speech: First : What are you here for?  Why do we need to embrace the Digital Era in our companies? Why is it key today to live in our fast-paced environments  not using  old recipes? Second : Make enemies! You can’t please everyone. Although it’s hard to admit, but you know it  in your inner self. The question is: with whom could  you make peace? Only with your enemies. Third : Take crips decisions. How many times did I hear  people complaining that their company was  not able to take decision? “We don’t know”; “We have to  launch another study”. Bring clarity, bring all the organisation to know what are the decisions. Fourth : Speak English!  Use the same language  in order that  everyone understands what you...
Build Your Cloud Computing Leadership : keep moving !

Build Your Cloud Computing Leadership : keep moving !

Did you ever met some people and said in your mind : “this person worth it” ? I am not talking about cosmetics 😉 During my experience I met few Leaders, fingers of one hand are enough. I think it’s important to identify Leaders close to you. Leaders are like a light in the dark helping us to see the right path… You can imagine I am looking for Leaders about Cloud Computing, I found some, but it is an other story. In this area, it is not about Company size or about Technology itself. It is about People, the women and the men, who are building our future with Cloud Computing. You want to have a Cloud Computing implementation in your company? First SaaS experience or IaaS delivered? A Cloud project to start? Have a look around! Did you see Cloud Computing Leadership in this area for your company? Lots of people are talking about Cloud stuff… Did you see the Leader who DO things, promote, write, connect and also help to bring this to reality in your Company? Leadership for Cloud Computing is key for the coming months. Why IT needs to have leadership for Cloud Computing? I see two main points : – First point coming in mind is Partnership and Business Value. What IT will become? Just contract management or commodity producer? No! IT will become and have to become a great Business Enabler, a Partner, and take advantage of all new technologies or innovations for business impact. – The second point is consistency, industrialization and cost efficiency. Remember the PC story, It doesn’t matter first,...
Key Principles for Private Cloud Implementation

Key Principles for Private Cloud Implementation

Implement a Private Cloud is a challenge that is worth it. This article aims to give some key principles to transform this challenge. 1 – Create a Team in any event, Nothing is more strong as a great team. The ideal is to go on the principle of the seven dwarfs. Doc, it can facilitate agreement on vocabulary and definitions. Happy, he is always ready even if he does not know why. Sneezy, just for paying attention to the season at the launch of the project, avoid the spring with hay fever. Sleepy, to add the necessary dynamism to the team. Grumpy, its role is to remind you that 25 years ago we did the same thing at Digital. Bashful, I do not know why but he knows. Finally, Dopey for any project to succeed we need a mascot! 2 – Benchmark yourself Compare its performance with its peers is essential to ensure benefit from best practices. Sectors such as Steel, Bank or Ice factories are an insurance to take up your project. Perform the operation several times. 3 – Structure your project Like the benchmarking, best practices should guide your project. Specify your needs before starting any implementation. Your need to be fully formalized and described by the project team. Unnecessary at this stage to involve the users of the solution, this can only lengthens the time of implementation. Governance around your project must be flawless with an operational committee based on diaries. 4 – Seek partners Partners are key to success. Little advice, only see the market leader ASM Cloud. The other offers are not yet fully...
Clouds and Men : the truth on what Cloud Computing will change for the teams

Clouds and Men : the truth on what Cloud Computing will change for the teams

I had some conversations about Cloud Computing Delivery Model and the impacts on teams. Sure, each time, either a business model is changing, or an innovation is coming, you will have some impacts for the teams. Good news is that jobs will be in the Cloud Computing for the coming years as CIO mention in an IBM Survey. A good question is : How can we prepare and involve teams to see this changes as an opportunity ? First, what are the impacts ? The impacts started with the move from “Plan – Build – Run” IT to a “Source – Integrate – Manage” one. If we look at the IT Teams as a whole, IT focused, in the past, on building the IT components and managing the Capacity. With Cloud switch, IT will have to become more a Business Enabler than Technology focus. It means IT people will have to be closer to the business to understand better the company and propose the bests solutions. IT teams will have to use what the market proposes instead of building or reinventing the wheel. It is like the automobile industry 20 years ago. This industry stopped building its own screw and has developed more partnership and integration capabilities. These are the majors impacts : Teams have to learn about doing the right partnerships, then doing the right selection, doing the right integration and last but not least a right run process. Easier to say than to do 😉 These point are confirmed by IT World Canada in the Survey on top Cloud Computing skills. The top three are the following...
What Cloud Computing will change for ? #2 : An Innovative Company perspective by Jérémy Fain

What Cloud Computing will change for ? #2 : An Innovative Company perspective by Jérémy Fain

Following the first post by Sylvain Pendaries, with a CIO perspective on what Cloud Computing will change, I am very proud to introduce this second post. “What Cloud Computing will change for ?…” Thanks to Jérémy ! An innovative Company perspective by Jérémy Fain. What will Cloud Computing change for you ? Verteego is an online environmental performance applications vendor. In other words, we provide software-as-a-service (SaaS) to help businesses go green by, for instance, monitoring their Greenhouse Gas emissions, or tracking hazardous chemicals in their supply chain. We basically are a pure player in the Cloud Computing space. Verteego wouldn’t exist as it is without the very notion of Cloud Computing, and Cloud Computing software pioneers such as SalesForce or NetSuite. So, Cloud Computing is not really a change driver for Verteego, but more of an enabler: the more Cloud Computing becomes a mainstream architecture within corporations, the easier it will be for Verteego to be deployed worldwide by global organizations who want to better the environment and their bottom line. Is there a change ? I believe Cloud Computing in itself represents both a cultural change and a technology challenge. What kind ? A cultural change because CIOs have to redefine the way information is structured: the era when data had to be stored within the firewall is over. The best applications are now available on the Cloud, and it would be a pity for users to have to consume software the old-fashioned way and not benefit from the latest innovations from independent application vendors. Looking at the economics of Cloud Computing, it’s much more healthy for a...
